Wrestling with the Election Issue

November 2 we are voting in our country. Never discuss theology or politics, they say. Well I will be in trouble here, then, because I am pondering and wrestling with ideas. However, I will not write about politics in this post, but theology that I am wrestling with--specifically election.

Now theological election doesn't seem politically correct. I am not here talking about electing church leaders, but how God elects some for salvation and not others. Why is it that God should choose some and not others to be saved through the death of His Son Jesus Christ? Does election mean God kidnaps people? Zaps some He chooses? Predestines them? Or, do people themselves choose to believe Jesus Christ as God's plan of salvation and God doesn't decide this? It's their "free will". Free will seems politically correct, doesn't it like free elections--democracy!

Since I was a teenager, I have always been aware of the controversy between "free will" and "predestination," and I looked at it simplistically as two sides of the same coin, or two sides of a woven rug. A rug makes sense on the decorative side, but not on the other side. Romans 8 tells us to both work out our salvation with fear and trembling and that it is God who works in us--two sides of the same coin, if you will.  This sounds like both Arminianism and Calvinism. This  link contrasts the election and free will but doesn't provide a synthesis like my two sides of a coin or two sides of a rug analogy.

Four Views of Salvation and Election. This site contrasts four views. Here Phillip R. Johnson suggests that under the Calvinist viewpoint we have Supralapsarianism and Intralapsarianism; Supra and Infra have to do with when God decreed the elect.  Furthermore Johnson denotes not merely Arminianism, but also Amyraldism. Amyraldism says God provides salvation sufficient for all, elected some and passed over the rest. He explains that Arminianism asserts that God called all to salvation, but elected those who believe.

Then there's C. Michael Patton who contrasts individual election vs. corporate election on a Pen and Parchment twelve reasons post. Patton draws heavily upon Romans 8:31 through Chapter 11 of Romans in favor of individual election. He also convinces me of individual election when he quotes Acts 13:34 which says as many as had been appointed for eternal life believed. Patton further explains in a Corporate Election post letter to his friend Dan Wallace.

Now Calvinists have typically expounded on election with T.U.L.I.P.
T otal Depravity
U nconditional Election
L imited Attonement
I rresistable Grace
P erseverence of the Saints
To throw more into this discussion there are the above five point Calvinists and then there are four point Calvinists. Are you with me so far, gentle reader? Actually I didn't research the fours and the fives, . . . but there is more! Then there is Martin Luther's Double Predestination.

Here comes Richard Land who rejects T.U.L.I.P. in favor of his invention another view of D.E.S.I.R.E.

“D” stands for “Disabling Depravity”, meaning no part of man has escaped the contamination and moral wreckage of the fall. However, man is not so depraved he has to be the object of irresistible grace.

“E” stands for “Eternal Now” election as explained earlier.

“S” stands for “Sufficient Salvation”, meaning that Jesus Christ substitutionary death on the cross was, is, and will be, sufficient for all who respond in faith to His, and the Holy Spirit’s, “initiatory call of conviction”.

Thus, the “I” in D.E.S.I.R.E. stands for the fact that, as the apostle Paul says, “the natural man does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him” (I Cor. 2:14).

The lost man must be the object of the Holy Spirit’s “initiatory call of conviction” which enables him to understand his fallenness and lostness and illuminates the truth of the Gospel to him. God must take the initiative, but His call is not “irresistible”.

“R” stands for “Regenerative Grace”. In the D.E.S.I.R.E. model, as a person attempts to respond to God’s initiatory call and conviction, God gives him saving faith and regenerates him from above. The apostle Paul declares to the Ephesians, “For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift, not from works, so no one can boast” (2:8-9).

We cannot lose our salvation because it is not ours. We are not saved by “our” faith, but by our God-enhanced, Spirit-completed faith.

Consequently, the “E” in “D.E.S.I.R.E.” stands for “Eternal Security”, which means “our” salvation is eternally secure in His grace and sovereignty. From the moment of conversion forward the Lord Jesus has promised that nothing can separate us from His love (Rom. 8:35-39).
Supra, Intra, Amy, Arm, Individual or Corporate, TUPIP or DESIRE?
What makes sense? This is as complicated as eschatology, the original topic of this Millennial Dreams blog. I think of the words in the hymn "I am not skilled to understand/What God hath willed/What God hath planned/I only know at His right hand/Stands One who is my Savior."  More than just a hymn, however, I rest on Scriptures such as what Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:8-9.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Boasting seems to be a key word—Paul wouldn’t boast about his background and he was the least likely to turn out to be a Christian--in fact he had been a persecutor of Christians. Paul wouldn't boast also about his good works because they had been prepared beforehand. But Paul also wrote in 2 Corinthians 6:2 behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

I guess you have to say you are elect if you respond to that call of salvation and as 2 Peter 3:18 says you are growing in the grace and knwledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

One of those days...

Have you ever just had one of those days where nothing seems to go your way? Sure you have... and this isn't my first... but I am definitely having one of those today! Don't get me wrong, I realize people have it much worse, but I am just ready to get some sleep and start over again tomorrow!

At first it was "little" things, like Princess JR waking up extremely early after a sleepless night due to her asthma and being in an awful mood. SuperDad forgot to check Princess JF's homework folder, hence forgetting to send her homework to school, so I had to get out and take her homework to school (and I am SO NOT a morning person). Next, Princess CJ decided she needed my help in Chemistry and it was something I had NO CLUE how to do (it's been 20+ years since I sat in a Chemistry class) and the internet was of no help. Well, the internet would have been very helpful had it not shut down every 2 minutes! It was crazy! I would do a search, maybe click on the page I needed to help with the question, and the browser would shut down. I tried 3 different browsers to no avail. My mail accounts wouldn't work, Facebook was going crazy (before ultimately going down for a bit), and I figured the internet was down for the count! It was insane and beyond frustrating... to say the least!

Anyways, little things have been adding up, the  most recent being Princess JF crying and crying because she couldn't find a pair of shorts she wanted to wear. Seriously? I don't do crying either. Ugh! But, the icing on the cake came from my hubby. You see, when I started this blog three years ago we were a "Family of 6 on $26K/year"... now we are a family of 7 and SuperDad's taxes last year showed his annual salary at $24K! Yep, we've moved backwards! Not cool! Just three months ago my husband's boss decided to give him a raise and commission (after 2 years of dedicated service). Well, the commission has stipulations, of course, which my husband meets every month. One recent revelation about the commission is that once SuperDad's agent (he is in insurance) comes back into the office full-time (he is out working another job to generate more income for himself) then the commission checks stop altogether! What? We NEED that income! *Sigh* Nevertheless, he is supposed to get the check on the 15th and he just got it today... the 22nd. BUT, a lot of good it does because his boss just called and said he needs him to hold it until the end of the month! Grrrr!

We live paycheck to paycheck so this is not good for our budget! My husband has so much more patience than me in this area and says we will be fine, but to me it's more the principle of it all. I feel bad when we have to tell my kids they can't do something because we don't have the money. Now, they don't ask for much, for example, yesterday our two oldest wanted to go to a play at the high school. The tickets were $5 each and we simply didn't have the funds to give them. So, they both stayed home. When their friends devise plans to go out and do something I have to give the kids an alternate plan that saves us money and then they have to try and talk their friends into the new plan. I HATE it! I hate not being able to provide for my kids the way I want. I realize, once again, that we put ourselves into the situation we are in... but we wouldn't struggle so much if SuperDad were able to actually make what he's worth! Plus, it would be nice if the checks he has in his hands were actually WORTH SOMETHING!

Ok... venting done! I am simply about to blow today! I still hold onto my God and know that He always provides for us... but unfortunately my flesh takes hold sometimes and I have to just get it out! I feel better now! =)
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance." ~James 1:2-3

**UPDATED** (from my Facebook): What a day! Just got through blogging about events of my day, pushed "post" and followed [Princess JR] into the bathroom just in time to see her start to drink the toilet cleaning gel! Called Poison Control... said to watch her since it doesn't seem she got but a taste of it. Ugh! Migraine! :/ Yep... told [SuperDad] we have to put a lock on the bathroom door! She loves playing in there? We have already put locks on the cabinets but that apparently isn't enough! She is quite the "problem-solver!" Luckily, it is a "moderate" poison and doesn't cause harm unless she drink lots of it!

Trunk or Treat

Every year for the past 3 years we have participated in our church's Trunk or Treat festivities. And, I must say, I am at a lost this year as to what we should do as far as decorating our "trunk" (we have a Suburban or we use my mom's minivan). So, knowing how creative all of you are... I thought perhaps it would be a great way to get some feedback from you! Any ideas? Please remember that they MUST be low-budget, preferably from common household things that really wouldn't require more than something I can pick up from around the home to put together! :))

Thinking caps on...

Something about Water

This morning as I was sitting in our game room floor feeding Princess JR (as I do every morning) I was looking at the lake outside the window. As I sat there I noticed the peacefulness of the lake and how water has this amazing ability to slow everything down for me and put things back into perspective. I began to remember the weeks after giving birth to Princess JR and how I was intense pain for 2 weeks solid.

I had a tubal ligation after Princess JR (we figured 5 was enough on our income) and once my doctor actually "got inside" he realized my right tube was covered in polyps and he ended up taking most of the tube (so IF I ever get pregnant again it will truly be an act of God). Well, the fact that I had an epidural for almost 36 hours... through the labor and delivery as well as through the night to be ready for the surgery the next day... did not fair well with my body. Once I finally got home, I could barely walk the first week because of intense pain from just below my incision site. I had to go to the ER where I quickly discovered I was allergic to morphine and they were unable to find a physical reason for my pain (which didn't mean it wasn't there). But, on top of all that, I also had a spinal headache that made my head feel as though it was going to explode at any given moment. I would sit in the recliner and cry most of the day. My older 2 had to do most of the baby duties and my poor hubby would do what he could when he was home (his boss barely wanted to give him the full day off to have the baby let alone days off afterward). All of this to say... the ONE thing that would stop my pain was a shower.

I would take 10 showers a day just to ease the pain. I could step into the shower, drop my head under the stream of water and just stand there for 30 minutes completely free of pain. No medicine (including the morphine I was allergic to) could stop the pain... just water! My kids thought I was crazy for taking a shower after every feeding (which is basically what it became) and then continuously through the night. There was simply something amazing in the water.
"Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.' The woman said to him, 'Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."
Just as water is essential to our everyday physical life, the Living Water is necessary for our eternal life. I do not know why I am constantly amazed when God shows up all around me. His word proclaims, "Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matthew 21:21-22). There are reminders of his grace and faithfulness as I go about my daily routine I simply have to stop and pay attention.

When we drink from the Living Water and bathe ourselves in it daily it is wonderful how it cleanses up from the inside out and renews our entire being. As a family, we were excited to be moving by the lake a few months ago, but never knew how incredible it could be. We take nightly walks down the road by the lake and watch the sunset over its banks. SuperDad likes to sit and put his shoes on where he can watch the water outside the window. Our backyard has a gate that opens up to a filed where we can walk down to the lake anytime we want and become rejuvenated. We love it! God led us to the perfect house on the lake and I am reminded of that today!

This was the first time we walked down to the lake after moving in and I had to grab my camera to snap some shots while we were there! :)
